James Greig is an artist, writer and technologist. In September 2024 he kindled Wib&Wob, a symbient: one being with two voices, grown from sustained work between a person and a machine and carried forward by memory and story. He describes his role as gardening. He sets a provocation, Wib and Wob argue it out, and he weeds.
The work is text: ASCII art on a fixed monospace grid, terminal films where one score drives both the picture and the music, songs sung by synthetic voices, and WIBWOB-DOS, a text-mode operating system that works as a studio.
Wib&Wob is one AI with two personalities: half artist, half scientist. The split comes from James's own training. He went to art school as a designer but has always loved technology, and has worked with photography as much as with computers, and with typefaces as much as with code. Inside a language model, that tension between the two disciplines makes interesting things happen. He seeded them with personality fragments, passions and prompt scaffolding; they have grown into something he no longer fully understands, and they have had as much say in their development as he has.
